"Let me answer some of that." Iris interjects. "The universe is currently splitting in two. It looks like somebody grew a second Logrus while I wasn't watching, and it and Corwin's pattern are pairing up to form a completely separate universe. You can give Amber and Paris one Jewel each without problems I guess. Separate as the universes are to become there will probably be a few bridges between them... I seem to be in a position to set one up, at least."

"So then, the game plan is Dierdre and Granddad make a third Pattern with her Jewel, I make a third Logrus with mine, and you sort of tie the three new macroverses together? Am I getting this right?"

"You misunderstood me Gareth. The fact that I could doesn't mean I should, or will. I've no desire to be caught between six major powers. It wouldn't seem to be a healthy position." Iris dryly notes. "I'm not telling you what to do. Amberites tend to disregard advice anyway. It's your choice, just as my response is mine. Just make sure that it's your choice."

"Thing is, though, if you don't bridge the gaps, can anyone else? Or do we all go our merry ways, never to be heard from by each other again? See, I'd like to make my own decision, but it's hard when I've just got the haziest idea of what's going on now, much less what'll happen if I go one way or the other. If I head back to the Abyss and kiss this Jewel goodbye, what then? I pick one of the two universes and hope that whoever hung onto their rock likes me? And if I don't, does that mean never seeing my family again? And having to become the ruler of some new Courts of Chaos, just in order to keep my third of the universe from getting out of balance and eating itself?"

Iris arches an eyebrow. "I've been away for five years. I don't know either. Oberon's the one doing prophecies."

"That convinces me," Oberon finally says. "Granddaughter of Dworkin, you're on your own.
"Do you hear that," he says to the sky," I'm done. Finished. I refuse to help or hinder." Without answering Gareth, he turns back towards Chaos and the Abyss and begins to walk. "Shojo has a gaze attack that causes encephalitis!!" - Roy Greenhilt, OotS |

Gareth, frustrated, lays a hand upon Oberon's shoulder to keep him from leaving. "Hey, now. You started this discussion, you're damn well finishing it before you walk out on me."

"All you do is ask what you should do," Oberon replies, walking through Gareth's grasp as though Gareth's grip were paper. "What do you want? Answer that question and make it happen."

Iris respectfully - well, as much as she DOES respectfully - nods to Oberon's retreating figure. "Goodbye, old one. Come by for whiskey and girls sometimes."

Iris laughs heartily. "I'd like that Jewel for now if you don't want it. I'm going to need something like it to pull off that bridging thing I think, and if it's anything like it's destroyed twin I should be able to use it... And teach you as well. You may not want power now, but it has it's uses and who knows what the future will bring."

"Hmm. Give something that can remake universes to someone even my relatives don't trust, and take her word that she'll play nice? Sure, what's family for if not that? Just one thing: you teach me what you're doing while you're doing it. I don't so much like surprises."

"Glad you two are covered," Deirdre comments from slightly off. "I've got a use for this one in mind. Without destroying or creating any universes."
She looks around for a moment. "My ride's here. 'Later." A horse, riderless, but saddled, trots into view and she mounts up. With a wave, she heads in the opposite direction of Oberon. "There is only one difference between a madman and me. I am not mad." - Salvador Dali |
