[ hmm, that part of the game was lost in the boardhack
"Nothing so profound," Clive answers. "A few years ago I tried a little experiment... a fishing expedition. I tried hellriding to him. At first it took me in aimless circles... and then I believe he was distracted enough to let down his guard, because I was able to home in on him. It led me right to Amber, to yet another hidden room in the castle. Something must have spooked him just in time - maybe me, or maybe Julian and Brand at the Primal Pattern, as the timing was about right for that... His coffee was still warm and the trumps he'd been working on were still there. The trumps are why I'm so sure it was him... there's no other source for a half-finished card in his style with the ink still drying." "My reasons for seeking him took care of themselves, so I hadn't tried again since. I figured, then, that he'd resurface whenever he was ready to. The next time I had a pressing need to talk to him, well, the hellride option was no longer available to me." |

Random frowns. "Yeah, that's pretty good proof that he's still around. Well he hasn't been back to that lair. I imagine he'll have found another already.
"When you've got the time, drop by Amber. It might be fun to see..." He shakes his head. "Maybe not. I don't want to know how new Chaos interacts with old Amber. Go visit Corwin instead. By the way, have you decided what you're going to call the place?" Pippin: Are we lost? Merry: No Pippin: I think we are Merry: Shh. Gandalf's thinkin' Pippin: Merry? Merry: What? "I haven't picked out a name yet... maybe after I start a settlement here."
Clive considers the Amber/Paris suggestions and shakes his head negative. "I should get more practice at muting my presence first... and there are things I should do here before wandering too far away." "Besides yourself and Fiona, Benedict and Bleys tried to reach me. Any idea what they wanted? Anything I shouldn't tell them yet?" |

"Benedict and Bleys," Random muses. "It might be interesting to hear what they want. Let me give you a piece of advice, monarch to... whatever. After this I might find the need to screw you over, you being a rival power and all. Don't ask me what to tell or not tell my family."

"Old reflexes," Clive nods slowly. The thought occurs to him that it's his family, too, and perhaps certain elements of the younger generation might be up for recruitment...
Of course, there's equal risk that that would become the vector for the incoming screwing-over. That's just how the game is played. |

"Mm. I begin to understand."
The talk of visting other power centers (or not) reminds him that Corwin seemed not to like anyone lingering too long around Paris. Clive diverts some portion of his attention to... well, not to sealing this place off, but to throwing out some misdirection. Let any who seek to approach be turned in circles and confused. |

Polly is amused. "I wondered when you were going to think of that. I imagine it won't belong before someone comes looking for this place. If they're from the Courts and highly skilled, they'll probably..." Polly pauses for a moment. "I have to get used to your increased power. Someone from the Courts will have a better chance of reaching this place than someone from Amber."

Clive nods, and decides to add another layer of delays - randomly scattered fake Logruses, which are hidden the same way as the real one.

"Fascinating," Polly observes. "That quite well explains the origins of the outer layers of the Courts of Chaos. Thank you."

"Really? Neat. I never did get a good look at those. I had a guide the first time, was in too much of a hurry the second time, and used a trump the third time."
Clive considers a moment. "If they know it's me here, they'll probably send the only guy they have who knows me. Which I guess is fine, since that'd be the only one I'd talk to anyway." |

Clive nods. "Guess so."
"Hmm," he adds. "If my hiding stuff created features resembling some from Chaos... I wonder what it was they were hiding from?" |

"Processing," Polly says monotone. Then, "Sorry. That took a lot of thought. They were hiding from each other. The resemblence isn't complete and a lot of extrapolation was involved, but the defenses are laid out against other portions of the Courts."

"Hmm. Maybe some old civil war or something," Clive shrugs. "Well, I don't have any plans to mimick old Courts politics here."
The reshifting of shadow is pretty convenient. Anyone who really wants to talk will come in person anyway, and it'll take them a while to arrive, and Clive'll know in advance. That certainly frees up some time. There are some little things Clive's been meaning to do - like put up a brick wall around the Logrus so wandering locals don't go mad from the sight of it - and some bigger things, like that trump node. While he's doing that, his subconcious can grind away at other problems in the background. |

Re: Clive: Here there be dragons | #38 | ||

Clive starts on building that shelter around the Logrus, then. Just a brick wall converted from local material, going around the Logrus (and a comfortably large band of extra space). It only really needs to be high enough to block the direct line of sight to it. One door. Some drainage so it doesn't turn into The Swimming Pool of Chaos next time it rains. A few standard warning signs around the door, like "Danger!" and "Stop" and "High voltage". And some of the non-language ones where stick figures get mauled, like the ones around heavy machinery where Mr Stick's arm is gouged by the dangerous spinning blade, or Mr Stick drinks the tasty smoking potion and his eyes turn into XX, or where Cthulhu feasts on Mr Stick's tasty brains.
After that he'll sit here in the center and remotely scout out locations for the future trump node. Some shadow fairly close, but not too close to any of those eddies of misdirection, which might interfere with it (or draw people to it)... |

Aww, TSPOC (tm) would be cute.

[ What's "TSPOC"? ]
Clive walks out there. "You've already picked a decent spot," he comments. "Do you have any preferences for what you'd like it to look like? A node is functional, but it's also Art." |
